tbh my thesis on the astronomical clock in prague might just become a redo of a tenth grade thesis i did about the history of clocks. like the question i want to answer is "why does this clock fascinate us so much" and i think the surface level answer is that it looks cool as hell and is in a touristy part of a touristy town - but on the deeper level it's like. well it's one of the oldest mechanical clocks in the world that's still ticking, and it barely looks like the clocks we have now. it's like pshaw of course i can read a clock, you just look at the dial and the hands, right? and then this clock is like. unreadable because the upper dial shows no less than four kinds of time: babylonian time (twelve hours of day + twelve hours of night, but the length of the hours varies depending on the place and time of year), bohemian or italian time (24 hours that start at sunset, good for seeing how many hours of daylight there's left), old germanic time i think it was called (that's just like what we use now except it doesn't account for daylight savings!), and sidereal time (uhhh is this the zodiac circle thing?????? i should know this)
because the thing about how we count time is, WHY do we count time the way we do? why Twelve hours specifically. what matters more, exact measurements of time units, or following the ebb and flow of daylight? has the way the shaped clocks shaped our lives?? MUCH TO THINK ABOUT. or at least i think about it when i see a clock like the orloj.
#the good news is i found a book about the history of clocks and timekeeping which will hopefully be a hugely helpful source for me#i just need to. read the relevant parts but it helps that i am genuinely deeply fascinated by this topic#and maybe i will manage to close the scope on my thesis a bit bc it's soooo tempting to bite off more than i can chew#its like ohh how does this signify the cross section between religious belief and the hard sciences and how maybe they weren't that separate#that's just. that's way above my paygrade#anyway from an anthropology perspective i love to be confronted with how what we're used to is far from universal and eternal#that's the good shit

Tbh I think no amount of discourse, rarepairs, unpopular takes, etc in fandom compares in terms of pain/annoyance level of liking something that everyone else actively hates.
Like, you can ignore discourse, curate your dashboard/social spaces, and block the shit out of people who like to argue and harass people. And also, you shouldn't be spending your fandom time engaging with people who annoy you anyways. Fandom is about fun, and if you engage with discourse you're ruining your own time by choice. Discourse and shit is only annoying if you engage in it or don't block it.
Shipping rarepairs or liking an obscure media kind of sucks because you have less content, but I'd say it's also a fun experience in its own way because when you DO find other people with the same interest, you tend to bond more closely and have more meaningful discussions since conversation about your shared interest is so rare.
But when you like something that everyone else hates? It fucking sucks because not only is there hardly anyone to talk to about what you like (as with rarepairs and obscure faves), wandering fandom spaces is like playing Minesweeper the way you could be minding your own business and then suddenly get slapped in the face with someone randomly going "and btw [character/show/ship/etc] fucking sucks and is stupid and cringe." People literally have a tendency to be talking about something they actually enjoy and then randomly add "unlike [hated thing] which sucks so bad."
I've literally had to withdraw from interacting with fandoms entirely because the hate for the thing I liked was so prevalent that I couldn't go into the character/media tag, or sometimes tags that weren't even about that unpopular character/ship/thing, without randomly running into hate for my favorite thing.
Feels bad, man.
#squiggposting#negativity#yes this is about idw op lol but i'm sure there's other things i could think of too#my thesis is basically just that with negative things like discourse you can block/ignore#with positive things you can find the people who like the thing you do and build communities around them#but when you like something everyone else hates you cannot help but be exposed to negativity in the process of trying to find positivity#and a lot of the time the community hate for the Thing You Like seeps even into unrelated topics/conversations#to the point where 'just block/don't like don't look' doesn't really help#because if you blocked or stopped looking in every place you saw hate#you would basically not be able to interact with 90% of the people/content because that's what it would take to ignore the hate/bad takes

This is my hear me out moment
I think I will be a parasocial relationships defender for life because people tend to villanise the concept without really knowing how they work. People tend to think that parasocial relationships are only the instances where people stalk celebrities or want to kill themselves if their kpop bias reveals they are dating
But in reality parasocial relationships are classified by the idea that people in them are aware of the fact that these relationships are one sided and most people who interract with any celebrity fall in some way in a parasocial relationship. For a lot of people parasocial relationships are just a pretty healthy coping mechanism that lets them regulate their emotions by angaging with media they enjoy
This is just the natural effect of us using technology and our brains not knowing what a screen is. We know that the person isn’t actually talking to us but out brains don’t know this. Thats why we get attached to people in media.
The problem starts when the person in a parasocial relationship doesn’t know how to act in any social interaction online or offline. Because the parasocial relationship itself doesnt make you act “crazy” it just shows how you would act in any other relationships. Ofc they can become dangerous especially when people prey on emotionally unstable, socially anxious people to profit off of their emotional attachement (yes, kpop for example)
In a way its kind of like using substances. If you do it in moderation it can be fun and useful but relying on it too much can be harmful and take over your life
I would actually recommend reading any Tilo Hartmann’s publications on this topic because they’re super interesting
#parasocial relationships#i could write an actual thesis on this topic because i actually did#i have a bachelor degree in psychology and parasocial relationships were my topic lmao#i love this topic its very complex and has many good and bad sides to it#it can help some people in a healthy way but it can also ruin lives

How to Conduct a Literature Review Using Digital Tools (with Notion Template)

Embarking on a literature review is a fundamental component of academic research that can often appear overwhelming due to the sheer volume of relevant articles and sources. However, leveraging digital tools like Notion can substantially streamline and enhance this process. By providing a structured approach, Notion enables researchers to manage their literature reviews with greater efficiency and organization. This comprehensive guide will walk you through a methodical literature review workflow using Notion, explore various digital tools, and offer a Notion template to facilitate your research.
The Benefits of Using Notion

Notion is an advanced organizational tool that integrates the functionalities of note-taking, project management, and database creation into a single platform. Its versatility is particularly advantageous for managing a literature review. Here are several key benefits of using Notion:
Integration of Pages and Databases: Notion allows for seamless linking of pages and embedding of databases within other pages. This interconnected structure facilitates comprehensive data management and easy navigation between related information.
Customizable Filters and Sorting: Users can create custom properties and apply filters to databases, which enables sophisticated sorting and retrieval of data tailored to specific research needs.
Efficient Data Management: Notion supports the transfer and management of data from Excel sheets, enhancing the organization and accessibility of research materials.
In my workflow, Notion plays a central role through two primary databases: the ‘literature tracker’ and the ‘literature notes’ matrix. These databases are instrumental in tracking papers and synthesizing information to construct a coherent argument.
Stages to Literature Review Workflow

1. The Literature Search
The initial phase of a literature review involves a systematic search for relevant sources. This step is critical for building a comprehensive and well-rounded review.
Identify Keywords: Begin by developing a list of keywords that are pertinent to your research questions. Engage with your supervisor or colleagues to refine this list, ensuring it encompasses all relevant terms. As you progress, be prepared to adjust your keywords based on emerging research trends and findings.
Utilize Database Search Tools: Employ established databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar to locate pertinent literature. These platforms offer extensive search functionalities and access to a broad range of academic papers. Additionally, set up email alerts for new publications related to your keywords. This proactive approach ensures that you remain informed about the latest developments in your field.
Library Building and Recommendations: Manage your literature library using tools like Mendeley, which facilitates the organization of references and offers recommendations for related papers. Mendeley’s sharing capabilities also enable collaboration with colleagues, enhancing the collective management of research resources.
2. Literature Mapping Tools
Literature mapping tools are invaluable for visualizing the relationships between papers and identifying key research themes.
Citation Gecko: This tool constructs a citation tree from ‘seed papers,’ illustrating the connections between various studies through their citation relationships. It is particularly useful for uncovering seminal works and understanding the progression of research topics.
Connected Papers: Connected Papers uses a similarity algorithm to generate a graph of related papers based on a given key paper. This tool provides insights into related research that may not be immediately evident through direct citation links, helping to broaden your understanding of the field.
3. The Literature Tracker
An organized literature tracker is essential for managing and reviewing research papers effectively.
Organize with Notion: Utilize Notion’s customizable properties to document essential details of each paper. This includes metadata such as title, author, publication date, keywords, and summary. The ability to filter and sort this data simplifies the process of managing large volumes of literature.
Database Views: Notion offers various database views, such as the kanban board, which can be used to track your reading workflow. This visual representation aids in monitoring your progress and managing tasks associated with your literature review.
4. The Literature Synthesis Matrix
The synthesis matrix is a crucial component for organizing and synthesizing information from the literature.
Second Pass of Papers: After an initial screening, populate the ‘literature notes’ database with detailed information from the papers you deem relevant. This should include comprehensive notes on the paper’s summary, key results, methodology, critiques, and any future work suggested.
Relational Databases: Leverage Notion’s relational database capabilities to link related papers and create a synthesis matrix. This matrix helps in identifying connections between different studies and assists in constructing a coherent narrative for your literature review.
5. Writing Your Literature Review

Writing a literature review involves synthesizing the collected information into a structured and insightful analysis.
Identify Research Themes: Use your literature matrix to pinpoint key research themes and questions. These themes will form the basis of your literature review sections and guide the development of your thesis statement(s).
Summarize and Evaluate Sources: Focus on the most significant sources for each theme, summarizing their key points and critically evaluating their contributions. This involves assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each study and linking related research to provide a comprehensive overview.
Situate Your Research: Clearly articulate the research gap your study addresses, justifying your research approach based on the identified gaps and the synthesis of the reviewed literature.
6. Iterating Your Literature Review
A literature review is a dynamic process that requires regular updates and revisions.
Regular Updates: Continuously update your literature review as new research emerges. Balance the time spent on reading with the progress of your own research to ensure that your review remains current and relevant.
Notion Template
To facilitate your literature review process, I have developed a Notion template that includes:
A Literature Tracker Database: For recording and managing details of relevant papers.
A Literature Notes Database: For detailed notes and synthesis of the literature.
Predefined Properties: For filtering and sorting entries according to specific research needs.
You can duplicate and customize this template to fit your research requirements.

I hateee when people are so fucking nosy about my business and question everything I do i told my friend the like general outline of my research proposal for my bachelor thesis and she was like Hmmmmmmmm are you sure there’s gonna be enough appropriate secondary literature you might want to completely reconsider what you want to write about 🤓 like dude there is a girl a year above me rn whose thesis has the title and I quote “The Narrative of Dream SMP: A group of people living life in a video game?” like some poor professor actually gave a green light to a thesis like that. Why don’t you go bother her about secondary literature
#mp#like i get her concerns and she is just trying to be helpful but like I don’t bother HER abt her thesis#and I truly genuinely honestly believe I will be fine.#also like. do you think I haven’t spend enough time researching the like resources on the topic to find out if there’s enough#secondary literature at all. Like could I maybe perhaps possibly be the more knowledgeable one in this situation.

need you to know your username and that tag paragraph you left on a reblog one time have captivated me and that's why I followed. I know nothing about fermenting. I've spoken of you to my friends. tell me a fact about fermentation
I’m going to scream, this is my first ever ask and I’m so nervous!
Let’s see, a fact about fermentation.
There are too many so here’s a few that I find interesting 🤷♂️
SCOBY (the thing most commonly associated with kombucha) stands for (S)ymbiotic (C)ulture (O)f (B)acteria and (Y)east
Vinegar can also develop a SCOBY. However, instead of being called a SCOBY, it’s more typically referred to as a MOV - (M)other (O)f (V)inegar
Hot sauces can be fermented. Many famous hot sauces are fermented. And it’s generally agreed upon that fermentation hot sauces have a better blend of flavors.
If a bread had yeast in it it’s been fermented. The difference between regular bread and sourdough bread is that with the wild yeast some bacteria will also take root which helps give that nice tart taste!
Fermentation is just the process of having smaller microorganisms digest a food before you do. The most common fermenters are fungi and yeast, bacteria, mold, and enzymes.
All vinegar starts as alcohol
Even salamis and other dried/aged meats are fermented!
There’s so much more I could talk about, but these are a spread of facts that are neat!
#Saccharomyces cerevisiae#is the most common#bakers#and#brewers#yeast#it has over 9000 variant strains and all of them taste slightly different#I’ve used my knowledge of fermentation in my anthropology classes to help date a decomposing body simulation#I’m planning one of my thesis topics on the effects fermentation had on food preservation in different cultures#you can use fresh#live#whey from cheese or yogurt to make lemonade soda#all fermentation is about keeping microbes happy#fermenters can be cult-like with their farming and tending to their little buddies#even composting is a type of fermentation

just realised I've got a week left to finish my thesis. a week. one. fucking. week.
and it's still not enough. I'm not getting the last minute panic adrenaline that I'd need to get it done. I just do not care.
I try. I do try! it just doesn't work. doesn't matter how long I sit there. I've tried the 'just write anything! you can edit later!' advice but there is.. nothing.. in my head. I can't absorb any of the shit I read because I just do not care I don't want to think about this anymore I don't care I just don't care I just want to go away and never think about this again
#like I really. can't explain how stupid I feel when I'm working on this#there. is. nothing.#I can usually manage a few sentences about the basics and that's it#I used to know about this topic. I researched so much when I started working on my thesis. I was pretty motivated and. able to think about#it and like. have actual thoughts#but now there is nothing#my brother was here today and it did help with staying focused on it and not just giving up immediately. but I still could not think.#I'm fucking stupid and everyone will be so disappointed when I fail and I just need to fucking die already

Are there any Napoleon or history enthusiasts here who can help me find a topic for my 14-page term paper? Is there a topic concerning Napoleon (his reign, career, wars, etc.) that you find particularly interesting and on which I could write an interesting question and thesis? It must not be too broad, but should be enough to be able to write 14 pages about it as a first-year student.
#my prof is a mean old man and is of no help at all and it's my first semester and I've never written a scientific assignment#I mean I know of a couple topics I find mildly interesting but don't really know with what kind of question or thesis I could explore them#I feel like everything concerning Napoleon has already been written and talked about a gazillion times#maybe there is a history nerd out there who could help? pleaaase '-'#napoleon#napoleon bonaparte#history#18th century#19th century#napoleonic wars#napoleonic era#university#assignment help#european history#france history

How to Write a Critical Discussion for a Literature Review

In academic writing, a literature review is not considered comprehensive without a critical discussion. Critical analysis allows for the evaluation of existing literature’s strengths and weaknesses, identification of gaps, and highlighting of areas for further research. However, many students struggle with incorporating critique into their discussions. Below is a structured approach to help you add critical analysis to your literature review.
Structure for an Academic Critical Discussion
1.Summarize the Main Arguments; Begin by summarizing the key points and arguments presented in the literature sources you are reviewing. This sets the stage for your critical analysis and ensures that your readers understand the context.
2. Identify Conflicting Viewpoints or Gaps; After summarizing the main arguments, identify any conflicting viewpoints or gaps in the literature. Highlight inconsistencies and areas where the literature falls short. This step is essential for demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of the subject.
3. Evaluate Strengths and Weaknesses ; Next, critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each argument. Consider the following criteria when evaluating:
Methodology: Was the research design appropriate?
Evidence: Is the evidence used to support the argument credible and reliable?
Logic: Are the conclusions logically drawn from the evidence?
Relevance: How relevant is the argument to your own research question or field of study?
4.Discuss Relevance to Your Research; Finally, discuss the relevance of each point to your own research. Explain how the literature informs your study and fits within the broader academic context. This helps to justify the importance of your research and shows how it contributes to the field.
Example of Critical Discussion

Summarizing Main Arguments
Smith (2020) argues that social media has a significant impact on mental health, citing various studies that link social media usage to increased anxiety and depression. Conversely, Johnson (2019) suggests that the impact of social media is overstated and that it can also have positive effects, such as providing social support and enhancing well-being.
Identifying Conflicting Viewpoints
Smith (2020) and Johnson (2019) both address the impacts of social media but present conflicting viewpoints. Smith focuses on the negative aspects, while Johnson highlights potential benefits. This discrepancy suggests a gap in the literature, indicating a need for further research to reconcile these opposing perspectives.
Evaluating Strengths and Weaknesses
Smith’s (2020) argument is robust due to the wide range of empirical studies supporting it. However, the lack of longitudinal data in these studies weakens the argument. Johnson’s (2019) work is compelling because of its emphasis on positive outcomes, but it relies heavily on self-reported data, which can introduce bias.
Discussing Relevance to Your Research
The conflicting viewpoints of Smith (2020) and Johnson (2019) are highly relevant to my research on the effects of social media on adolescent mental health. Understanding these differing perspectives will help me design a more balanced study that considers both the potential risks and benefits of social media usage.
Conclusion
Incorporating critical discussion into your literature review enhances the depth of your analysis and demonstrates your ability to engage with existing research critically. By summarizing main arguments, identifying conflicting viewpoints, evaluating strengths and weaknesses, and discussing relevance, you can create a well-rounded literature review that provides valuable insights into your field of study. This structured approach transforms your literature review from a simple summary into a critical analysis that adds value to your research and contributes significantly to the academic community.
I welcome the opportunity to connect with you and discuss how I can assist you in realizing your academic aspirations. Whether you seek guidance in crafting a compelling research proposal, require comprehensive editing to refine your dissertation, or need support in conducting a thorough literature review, I am here to facilitate your journey towards academic success.
